LOS ANGELES -- NBC4's Dr. Bruce Hensel reported on a woman who couldn't get pregnant until she had a procedure using her own frozen eggs and frozen sperm.VideoSome people have said this is America's first such birth. Hensel said it is certainly one of the first.
Noah Domasin is a healthy one-month-old boyAn enhanced ultrasound picture showed what he looked like inside his mom Adrienne taken a few weeks before birth.A picture of Noah's beginning ten months ago showed just a tiny embryo."It's kind of weird. I didn't know what he'd look like at all," said mother Adrienne Domasin.Noah was conceived using frozen donor sperm and Adrienne's own frozen eggs.Dr. Jane Frederick said Noah is one of the first babies born that way in the U.S.Although other experts dispute that claim, there is no doubt that Noah is one of the first and there's little doubt Adrienne had little choice. She was unable to get pregnant despite two years of trying. "I thought it was never going to happen for me," Adrienne said.Frederick with the Huntington Reproductive Center quickly discovered the problem."She had blocked fallopian tubes so she was unable to use her own tubes to have a pregnancy," Frederick said.Frederick prescribed fertility drugs, and Adrienne went to an Internet donor site to choose a sperm donor.Frederick explained there was still no guarantee because although we can freeze sperm and embryos fairly easily, eggs are made mostly of water; and often burst on freezing; which is why there have been only 200 births from frozen eggs.New processes and chemicals are helping to protect the egg during freezing. They worked for Adrienne.Frederick retrieved 11 eggs from Adrienne.Eighty percent of the eggs survived the thaw. They were able to fertilize those with the sperm Adrienne selected. Two out of the original 11 embryos were transferred into Adrienne's uterus.Nine months later Noah was born at 8 lbs, 4 oz, 20.5 inches long and completely healthy."I'm really thankful. I never thought. I'm just amazed that he's mine," Adrienne said.Hensel said other centers say they've helped in similar births. Frederick says this is the first of published reports. Most important, egg freezing can help women who need to undergo treatment for cancer and young women who want to wait to have babies. Freezing young eggs instead of waiting decreases the chances of genetic problems.KNBC does not endorse any particular doctor or procedure.
