COTO DE CAZA, Calif. -- Fish and Game wardens planned to return Friday night to Coto de Caza to look for a mountain lion that fled after a 60-pound, 2-year-old cougar was fatally shot on a golf course, officials said.MapThe cougar was shot at 8:16 p.m. Thursday on the Coto de Caza Golf Course, 25291 Vista Del Verde, by Fish and Game officers using a shotgun, said Orange County sheriff's Lt. Larry Abbot. The mountain lion fled "and they're going out tonight" to look for it, Abbott said.
Resident Diane Cahill said she saw the mountcin lion and called 911. She said a wrought-iron fence and 20 feet separated the lion from her triplets, who were swimming.Residents have reported spotting five lions, including a mother and cubs and two young lions over the last week.Resident Denise Hall said she would like to see more effort made to save the animals."Well I feel that they should exhaust all resources to track these animals since we are encroaching on their territory," she said. Her son, Brett Hall, 12, said he saw a cougar on the golf course last week."I don't really think they should have shot it," he said. "I think they should have tracked it first because that's just, like, not right."
