TEMECULA, Calif. -- The Poomacha blaze, which has destroyed 143 homes and scorched about 50,000 acres in northern San Diego County, is no longer a threat to Temecula, fire officials said Wednesday. "It's not going anywhere at all," said Audrey Hagen of the California Department of Forestry, or Cal Fire. As of Wednesday morning, the fire was 70 percent contained, or surrounded, with full containment expected Nov. 6, she said.
The number of homes destroyed rose from 136 to 143, and the number outbuildings lost increased to 77. The cost of fighting the blaze was put at $10.5 million, Hagen said. Pockets of smoldering embers would have to be extinguished before the fire could be declared out, Hagen said. The Poomacha fire began early Oct. 23 on the La Jolla Indian Reservation, then burned up the flanks of Palomar Mountain. Area evacuations were lifted Wednesday morning, according to Cal Fire. Firefighters were working to stop the blaze from reaching Temecula and the Pechanga Indian Reservation, but it will take days to clear the brush in the creek bed just south of Temecula, where the fire has been burning for past few days, Hagen said.
