DUARTE, Calif. -- A mountain lion killed and partially ate one German Shepherd and injured another one in the backyard of a home in Duarte early Wednesday.Images | VideoThe attack occurred early Wednesday at a home on Cedarwood Avenue at the top of Las Lomas Road, said Mary Barrow, a spokeswoman for the city of Duarte. Sheriff's deputies and city animal control officers responded, and the state Department of Fish and Game was also notified, she said.
Duarte officials issued an alert to Bradbury, Monrovia and Azusa after the attack.Residents are advised to bring pets indoors, especially at night, and to never leave unsupervised children outside in foothill areas. The The California Department of Fish and Game issued the dog's owner, Jay Berger, a permit to destroy a mountain lion if he sees one near his home. Berger said he would not hesitate to shoot one. Although no mountain lion was actually spotted in this recent attack, game officials said the evidence indicated that the predator involved was a mountain lion.Berger said the dog that was killed was named Otis; he found Otis on his back. He said Otis weighed more than 90 lbs., so he believes the mountain lion must have weighed close to 200 lbs.In September, a mountain lion hauled a 60-lb. dog over a 5-foot fence at an Altadena home, and the dog was never seen again.Oct. 30, 2007: Canyon Country Residents Warned About Mountain Lion Sept. 9, 2007: Report: Hungry Lions Lurk In San Gabriel Hills
