Crackdown On Illegal Vendors Nets 3 People, 18 Cows

GLEN AVON, Calif. -- Three food vendors were arrested, and authorities seized 150 pounds of unregulated foods and 18 cows, as part of a crackdown on unlicensed vendors in the Jurupa Valley, authorities said Thursday.Most of the unregulated food was cheese, about 100 pounds of it, law enforcement officials said.Arrested were Maria Dioselina, 38, of Glen Avon; Teresa Vargas, 44, of Glen Avon; and Leonardo Rojas Mendez, 29, of Los Angeles.
Nine misdemeanor citations also were issued, sheriff's deputies said.Dioselina was arrested on suspicion of violating the state Food & Agriculture Code for making dairy products, selling unlicensed dairy products and failing to pay taxes, the sheriff's department said.Vargas was arrested on the same allegations, in addition to conspiracy to commit a felony, authorities said.Mendez was arrested on suspicion of selling pirated CDs.Dioselina was released Sunday from Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on $5,000 bail, according to jail records. Vargas was released on her own recognizance, and Mendez posted $7,500 bail.The sheriff's department said more arrests were planned, saying "food vendors selling food and dairy products that have not been inspected ... present a significant health and safety risk to the public and residents of Riverside County."The "illegal fiesta sweep" was done Sunday by members of the Inland Valley Task Force, comprised of Riverside County sheriff's deputies, as well as personnel from the county Environmental Health Department, Code Enforcement, state Department of Agriculture and Board of Equalization.
