ANAHEIM, Calif. -- When UCLA faces Texas A & M in an NCAA men's basketball tournament second-round game Saturday, a beverage traditionally associated with sporting events will again be missing from Honda Center's concession stands -- beer.Under NCAA rules, alcohol is not sold at any of its championship events "because it is concerned about alcohol abuse linked to athletic events," according to Jennifer Kearns, an associate director of public and media relations with the NCAA."The sale of alcohol at NCAA championship events does not fit in with the association's mission," Kearns said.
Tailgating will not be permitted in Honda Center's parking lots, according to Tim Ryan, the arena's executive vice president and chief executive officer. The NCAA also restricts the amount of commercials for beer, wine and malt beverages to 60 seconds for each hour of any telecast of its championship events and limits the amount of advertising beer, wine and malt beverages to 14 percent of the space in game programs devoted to advertising, Kearns said.In addition to money lost from potential beer sales at tournament games, the NCAA also is bypassing potential millions by not having an official beer sponsor.
