Police said a knife-wielding man was shot and killed after he stabbed an officer Tuesday morning in Hollywood.

Officers had approached the man -- who was lying on the ground -- to check on his well-being when he allegedly lunged at them with a knife and stabbed one of them, police said. The officer's injuries were not life-threatening.

"He was lying down. The officers got out of the car -- one would think -- to see why he was lying down, what was going on, was he OK," said Lee Sands of the LAPD. "At some point, the suspect drew a knife, stabbed one of the officers in the hand."

Both officers drew their guns, KNBC's John Cadiz Klemack reported. At least one of the officers fired multiple shots, killing the man.

The shooting occurred at about 4 a.m. in the 1400 block of Curson Avenue, said Los Angeles police Officer Kate Lopez of the Media Relations office.

Neighbors said transient activity in the area is prevalent, Klemack reported. Sands said the victim may have been a transient.

"He may have been there sleeping. (We) don't know any more on him," Sands said.

Mike Alvarez, who lives in the neighborhood, said he's not surprised police came to blows with Tuesday's victim.

"I walk around here all the time and sometimes, they're a little aggressive -- especially at night time. I carry a knife with me, myself," Alvarez said.

The LAPD is investigating the incident and more information is expected later this week, Klemack reported.

"Every officer-involved shooting we investigate is thorough. The officers' actions will be looked at by the division as well as the department," Sands said.
