Alice weighed 26 pounds when her owner dropped her off at the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 10 days ago. She said she could no longer care for the animal.

SPCA officials said Alice was so fat that she could no longer clean herself.

A few days later, after following a strict diet, Alice got down to a relatively svelte 22 pounds.

She will be put up for adoption when she reaches a healthy weight, which her veterinarian said would be from 9 to 12 pounds.
