NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- Florida's New Smyrna Beach has reported its third shark attack in as many days.
An 18-year-old surfer was bitten on the foot Monday. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released. The attack came one day after a 24-year-old surfer from Merritt Island was attacked in roughly the same spot.Beach patrol said the surfer jumped off his board into waist-deep water just before a shark grabbed his right calf. The victim, as well as around 30 nearby surfers, said they had never seen a shark, beach patrol said. The surfer paddled the approximately 75 yards to shore, where he was treated at the scene by beach patrol officers. The victim declined emergency transportation to the hospital. He was driven to the Bert Fish Medical Center by a friend.Beach patrol said this bite was worse than Saturday's bite, which occurred around the same time at the same area of the beach.Volusia County has reported 10 shark attacks so far this year. All of this comes after a triathlete was killed by a shark near San Diego on Friday.
