Minuteman, Others Protest Mexican Consulate

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- Dozens of American citizens protested outside the Mexican Consulate in San Bernardino on Wednesday.

Many of the protestors said they were part of the Minuteman group, KNBC's Mary Parks reported.
For more than a month, Mexican citizens have come to purchase government identification cards issued by the Mexican Consulate. As many as 130 people a week line up to get their cards.Lupe Moreno, a Minuteman from San Clemente, said setting up mobile government centers to issue and sell Consular ID cards is a practice that has to stop."Our government has let the American people and the citizens down," Moreno said. "People ask me, 'how can you, as a Latina, be against Latinos?' I'm not. I'm against people who break our laws."
Protesters said there is too much room for error with issuing the cards at mobile centers, Parks reported.Immigrant Julio Ortiz proudly held up his green card during the protest from inside the Consulate. He said the protesters are misunderstanding the purpose of the Matricula Centers."I don't understand why these people are doing this. I use the mobile consulate center a lot. People are here only to work," Ortiz said.Consulate officials said they have done nothing illegal, and have been operating the mobile centers for two years with the approval of both the Mexican and American governments.The Minutemen plan to protest Thursday at the Mexican Consulate in Santa Ana.
