A Long Beach man was in custody Monday in connection with the death of a woman whose burned body was found in an alley in Signal Hill, the sheriff's department reported.

Jose Linares, 29, was booked on suspicion of murder in the death of Sylvia Padilla, 33, also of Long Beach, whose body was discovered about 10:25 a.m. March 29, said Deputy Oscar Butao of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The charred remains were discovered in an alley in the 2400 block of Gundry Avenue, Butao said.

Linares, held without bail, was arrested Thursday and was scheduled to appear today in Long Beach Municipal Court, 415 W. Ocean Blvd., according to the sheriff's department.
