A Los Angeles subway train has struck and critically injured a woman.

Fire Department and transit officials Saturday said the 40-year-old woman was struck by a Metro Purple Line train at about 9:40 a.m. Saturday in the Westlake station, about three miles west of downtown.

Fire spokesman Cecil Manresa said the woman was in full cardiac arrest when she was found on the station's electrified third rail. The electricity was shut off so the woman could be rescued, given CPR and hospitalized.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokeswoman Gayle Anderson said the accident is causing 10-minute delays for other trains on the route.
