Crashed Hang Glider Sparks Small Malibu Brush Fire

MALIBU, Calif. -- A man flying a motorized hang glider crashed Wednesday near Malibu Bluffs State Park, suffering second-degree burns and sparking a quarter-acre brush fire, authorities said.
ImagesThe accident was reported about 11:10 a.m. near Malibu Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, said Inspector Frank Garrido of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, Garrido said.
Paramedics took the man to a hospital for treatment of second-degree burns to his back and legs.The crash occurred on land managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, in the general area where a fire in January 2007 damaged or destroyed some homes, including one owned by actress Suzanne Somers.Authorities were investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred several hundred yards away from power lines.
