LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher was recognized at City Hall on Wednesday for his love of family and commitment to his teammates.City Councilman Bernard Parks declared it "Derek Fisher Day" in honor of the 33-year-old basketball player, who announced his return to the Lakers last July after a season with the Utah Jazz."The biggest part of who I am as an adult male, as a person, the things that I believe in, the things that I've come to believe in and support and want to fight for, have been because of this city, because of the people of this city," Fisher said. "This city has given me much more than I could ever repay back."
Last May, Fisher announced that his infant daughter had been diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. Because of his daughter's illness, Fisher missed a conference semifinal game between the Utah Jazz and Golden State Warriors."He made sports history when he missed the first championship game due to the illness of his daughter, but then he arrived in the fourth quarter of the second game and just in time to score the winning three-point basket, which proves not only his commitment to his family but also the commitment to his team," Parks said.
