LOS ANGELES -- The speed limit at the site of Friday's deadly tunnel crash that shut down Interstate 5 has been altered several times in the past.
Now transportation officials want to know why.
California Department of Transportation district director Douglas Failing tells the Los Angeles Times that the speed limit near the truck tunnel has been repeatedly changed since it was built in the 1970s.
Most recently, the limit was raised from 45 mph to 55 mph.
Failing said his department will investigate reasons behind changes in the limit.
Friday's 31-vehicle pileup killed three. It occurred in a 550-foot long tunnel that runs under the freeway.
The cause of the pileup remains under investigation.
