PASADENA, Calif. -- A 7-year-old boy hit by a car in Old Town Pasadena remained hospitalized Friday with critical injuries, but his father was upgraded to fair condition, authorities said.Earlier reports said the car jumped the curb. On Friday, Pasadena police said that was not the case, and the collision happened as the father and son were in a crosswalk crossing Colorado Boulevard. The pair were struck after a Toyota Corolla and Nissan Altima collided at Colorado Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department.
The child, who was in "full arrest" when he was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital, remained listed in critical condition Friday afternoon, said Janet Pope Givens of the Pasadena Police Department. The boy's father, 36-year-old Jose De La Rosa, was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but he was upgraded Friday afternoon, she said. The boy's mother suffered minor injuries in the collision, as did two people riding in the Altima. The family was visiting relatives from their home in the Philippines and had been in the country only a few hours when the collision occurred, the Los Angeles Times reported.Pasadena Fire Department personnel who were at the scene underwent a stress debriefing afterward "because some of them have kids the same age," Derderian said."This is a tragic incident," said Pasadena Police Chief Christopher Vicino. "The Pasadena Police Department's Major Accident Investigation Team is conducting a detailed investigation that, when complete, will be submitted to the district attorney's and city prosecutor's office(s) to determine what if any further action will be taken. In the meantime, our heartfelt thoughts to out to the family."
