SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. -- A section of the Pasadena (110) Freeway in South Pasadena, closed for more than an hour because of a sinkhole, reopened just after 7:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

"We found out that we had a little more than a pothole. It so happened to be a sinkhole," said Ed Toledo of Caltrans.Caltrans closed the lane, and hours later it blocked all northbound lanes until repairs could be made on the growing sinkhole, CHP Officer David Porter said."The water was coming down the center median pipe, which was taking dirt into the pipe that we see down there now and washing all the material away," Toledo said. The southbound lanes were not affected.Judy Gish of Caltrans said the sinkhole was caused by corrosion of a storm drain, and crews were sent to replace a 26-foot section of the underground pipe. Corrosion in the decades-old storm drain undermined the stability of the ground beneath the roadway, authorities said.Beginning Friday, there will be lane closures at the end of the 110 while sidewalks, curbs and gutters are installed and road paving is completed on Arroyo Parkway at Glenarm Street, said Pasadena city spokeswoman Ann Erdman.Motorists can expect significant delays when exiting the 110 at Arroyo Parkway Friday through Monday and are advised to use the exits at Orange Grove Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue.Construction is expected to continue over the next several weeks, according to reports.
